Jellied Hot Dog Loaf

I just noticed a little 1968 boxed set on my shelf including the "New Hotdog Cookbook" chock full of incredibly inedible-sounding tube-steak casseroles, salads and even pies. Don't know how I missed the fun until now. There are the "Asparagus & Hot Dog Recipes 1 and 2," the "Oriental Hot Dog Casserole" (with plenty of canned green beans, chinese veggies and water chestnuts under a blanket of mushroom soup and American cheese) and the I'm-actually-curious-to-try-this "Drunken Hot Dogs" recipe which calls for steeping hotdogs in a sauce of sour-mash bourbon & brown sugar. But this gelled monstrosity is the Pièce de résistance. NOTE: should anyone actually MAKE this recipe, I would love to see your photos....

Makes one loaf
  • 12 hot dogs
  • 1 Tbsp unflavored gelatin
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup sweet-sour pickles, very finely sliced
  • 1/2 cup pimiento-stuffed olives, very finely sliced
  • 1 Tbsp onion, finely grated
  • 1 tsp prepared Dusseldorf-style mustard
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
    Instructions
    1. Chop six of the hot dogs until they are the consistency of coarse corn meal. Set aside
    2. Soften the gelatin in cold water for 5 minutes. Add hot water and stir until dissolved. Add lemon juice. Place in the coldest part of the fridge for 1 hour until thickened
    3. Beat thickened gelatin with electric or rotary beater until it is light and fluffy. Fold in chopped hot dogs, pickles, olives, grated onion, mustard and mayo. Place three of the whole hot dogs in the bottom of a loaf pan which has been rinsed in ice cold water. Pour one half of the gelatin mixture over them. Place the remaining three hot dogs over the gelatin. Pour the remainder of the gelatin mixture over them. Place in the coldest part of the refrigerator for at least four hours. Unmold on a thick bed of shredded lettuce and serve with additional mayonnaise which has been slightly flavored with horseradish.

The 1968 recipe includes stacking hotdogs between the gel layers, for a mosaic effect when sliced :)
